How to Prepare Natural Hair Before Extension Appointment

Why the first appointment starts long before you sit in the chair

Hair extensions look their best when they have a clean, honest base to work with. Whether you are having tape wefts, micro rings, nanos or clip-ins fitted, every method relies on your natural hair being free of residue and in good condition. Product build-up, oils and conditioner create a slippery film that stops bonds and rings gripping properly. The result is slippage, uneven tension, tenderness at the roots and a set that drops out far sooner than it should.

Arriving with clean, dry, product-free hair takes about twenty minutes of effort and makes a genuine difference to fit, comfort and how long your extensions last. Here is a simple routine to follow in the days before your appointment.

Wash your hair 12 to 24 hours beforehand

Timing matters as much as technique. Washing the night before, or the morning of if your appointment is later in the day, gives your scalp time to settle and your hair time to dry completely. Try not to leave it any longer than about 36 hours, as natural oils will start to build up again, particularly around the hairline and crown.

  • Double cleanse the scalp. Use a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo and massage it into the scalp with your fingertips, not your nails. Rinse thoroughly and repeat. Residue hides at the roots and nape, exactly where many extensions are attached.
  • Condition mid-lengths and ends only. Avoid the scalp and the first few inches of hair. Conditioner there leaves a silicone-like coating that weakens adhesion.
  • Skip heavy masks and treatments. Leave deep conditioning masks, hot oil treatments and scalp serums until at least 48 hours after your fitting.
  • Rinse with cooler water at the end to close the cuticle and add shine.

If your stylist has recommended a clarifying wash, use it once before your normal shampoo. If you colour your hair at home, leave at least a week between colouring and your extension appointment so the cuticle has fully settled.

Dry properly and keep styling products minimal

Extensions must be fitted to completely dry hair. Damp hair stretches, feels cooler and can cause bonds to slide or rings to feel loose as it dries. Air-drying is ideal, but if you use a hairdryer, keep it on a low-to-medium heat and dry the roots and scalp fully, then work down the lengths.

  • Detangle gently with a wide-tooth comb, starting at the ends and working upwards. Never drag through knots from the roots.
  • Avoid leave-in conditioners, oils, serums, heat protectors and shine sprays on the day. These are the most common culprits for slipping tape and loosening rings.
  • No dry shampoo, hairspray, mousse or root lift. Even a small amount leaves powder and film on the scalp.
  • Go easy on heat tools. Straightening or curling isn't banned, but keep the temperature moderate and let the hair cool fully before your appointment.

A tiny drop of serum through the very ends is usually fine if your hair is prone to tangling, but keep it well away from the scalp. If in doubt, leave it out.

How to arrive on the day

Small practicalities make the fitting smoother for both of you. Wear a loose top with a wide or buttoned neckline so it can be removed easily afterwards without disturbing fresh bonds. Avoid hoodies, turtlenecks and anything tight around the shoulders.

  • Arrive with your hair down and completely loose — no bobbles, clips, bobby pins, plaits or buns.
  • Come with a clean scalp and no dry shampoo, even if your hair feels slightly flat. Your stylist can add volume afterwards.
  • Eat something beforehand. Fittings can take two to four hours depending on the method and volume.
  • Bring inspiration photos and be honest about how much styling time you have each morning.
  • Bring any questions about aftercare, brushing and maintenance so your stylist can talk you through them while fitting.

Tell your stylist about scalp and hair health

Honesty here protects your natural hair. Mention any recent chemical services — colour, bleach, keratin smoothing or relaxers — as some methods need a two-week gap. Flag anything else going on too:

  • Sore, tender, itchy or flaky scalp, dandruff, psoriasis or eczema
  • Cuts, burns, recent waxing or a scalp treatment within the past week
  • Hair loss, thinning at the temples or a history of traction alopecia
  • Very fine or very oily hair, which may need a lighter method or fewer rows
  • Recent sunburn on the scalp or a fresh chemical peel

If any of these apply, it may be worth postponing. A short delay is far better than an irritated scalp or damaged roots, and most stylists will happily rearrange.

Set yourself up for easy aftercare

Preparation doesn't end at the salon door. Before your appointment, pick up a soft bristle or looped extension brush, a sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner, a heat protectant spray, and a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction overnight. Book your maintenance appointment before you leave, usually four to eight weeks depending on the method, and note the date in your diary.

Follow this routine and you will arrive with hair that is clean, dry and ready. Your stylist can then focus on fitting extensions evenly and comfortably, giving you a finish that sits naturally and lasts as long as it should.
